25/01/2009 - Dearer Foreign Holidays As Pound Tumbles
What Your Pound Will Buy In France | Many families are having to think twice before arranging holidays abroad, whilst those who have already booked will have to cut back on items such as car hire, meals and drinks. With the UK Pound at a record low our slumping currency is set to add a further £200 to the cost of the average holiday in the eurozone.
With more and more Britons deciding to stay in the UK for their holidays this year the self catering sector offers great value for money, reliability and the without the worry of exchange rates and surcharges. The best advantage is of course you know right from the outset how much you will spend on food and drink.
The Lake District, recently voted the Best Tourist Destination in the UK at the recent British Travel Awards also has the great advantage of over 2,000 miles of public footpath running through some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK that has drawn visitors for generations, which of course is all free of charge once you are here on holiday!

02/01/2009 - Lakes Prepares For Upsurge in UK Domestic Tourism
Walking in The Coppermines Valley on Boxing Day | VisitBritain expect 20% of people who holidayed abroard last year to take their annual here in the UK in 2009. With the pound taking a battering in the foreign exchange markets an extra 4.9 million people will be looking for a UK domestic holiday.
Cumbria Tourism's spokesperson, Julie Durroch said today: "It looks like 2009 has the potential to be a great year for UK tourism as the ever-weakening pound and volatile fuel costs mean that you just don't get the same value for money overseas. The Lake District is in a particularly great position after winning the Best UK Destination at the British Travel Awards."
The evidence so far from Coniston supports this with a huge number of bookings flooding into The Coppermines and Lakes Cottages' office over the last few days.

09/12/2008 - Old Man Took His Toll
The view from the Old Man of Coniston | Mount Everest, at 29,028ft, is the highest mountain on Earth. By comparison the Old Man of Conistonn is apaltry 2,276ft. But a mountain is a mountain, I said, as we set out doe our hike to the summit. We did cheat a bit as well. Our accommodation and starting point was half way up.
We were staying at the Old Sawmill [The Coppermine Cottages] at the disused coppermines in Coniston. The sawmill lay derelict for many years, until it was converted into four cottages, each linked through internal passageways and doors to accommodate up to 26 people. Our quarter could sleep up to eight, but acted as an excellent base for me, my wife and son.

01/12/2008 - Lake District Named Best UK Holiday Destination 2008
Best UK Holiday Destination | The Lake District has won a major tourism honour by being named the best holiday destination in the UK at a national awards ceremony. The coveted award, which every destination in the country strives to win, was announced at the prestigious British Travel Awards 2008 held in London. Crucially, the Lake District won the all important public vote. Thousands named the area as the best place in the UK to take a holiday. London took the silver award and Cornwall was third.
Although just 40 miles long and 33 miles across, The Lake District is home to some of the most stunning countryside in the world. It is home to all of England's highest mountains and longest lakes as well as award-winning accommodation, place to eat and visit.
Ian Stephens, Chief Executive of Cumbria Tourism, said: "This is the most significant award the Lake District has won in recent years. The fact we have been named by the public and featured at the UK's leading travel awards is particularly impressive and an important message to convey to visitors for 2009." The British Travel awards are the largest travel awards programme in the UK and an easily recognisable benchmark for excellence when it comes to finding out the best in the business. The event consists of the UK's leading professionals from the travel industry and there are over 60 categories. Sponsors of the evening were Lloyds TSB Cardnet.
Lorraine Barnes Burton, CEO of The British Travel Awards commented: "The consumer voters for these awards are made up of a large cross section of the UK's travelling public. Consumers are also asked to support their votes, and the compactness of what's on offer in The Lake District, the landscape and the beauty of the area clearly played an important part when choosing their favourite UK Destination."
